Stun grenade thrown near venue of Assir’s sit-in

Sheikh Ahmad al-Assir and his partisans formed a human ring on Sunday on the side of the seaside boulevard in Sidon, raising banners that read: “No to arms hegemony, our blood is not water.”

This as a stun grenade was thrown around yesterday around midnight near the venue of the Imam of the Bilal bin Rabbah Mosque, Sheikh Ahmad Assir’s sit-in, at the northern entrance of Sidon.

The grenade detonated near a car showroom, causing material damages to the shop. One suspect was arrested for interrogation.

Assir later accused Hezbollah and Amal Movement of throwing the stun grenade, adding that they will be responsible for any bloodshed in the town.

In a statement to LBCI, Assir said that these “provocative” acts will not weaken his determination, pointing out that he will be speaking out against Speaker Nabih Berri and Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah in the upcoming few hours.

Assir has defied repeated calls to end his sit-in which has allegedly affected the merchants’ livelihoods and caused congested traffic in the town.

Accordingly, many futile counter-protests were staged to pressure Assir into suspending his sit-it.

Assir began his protest against Hezbollah’s “extra-state" arms on June 28 and has repeatedly stressed that he won’t end the sit-in until his demands are met.
