Conflict erupts between Assir’s supporters and passers-by in Sidon

Supporters of Sheikh Ahmad Assir, Imam of the Bilal Bin Rabah Mosque in Sidon, staged a protest on Thursday along Sidon’s Corniche.

A conflict erupted between Assir’s supporters and a number of passers-by in Sidon. The ISF intervened to control the situation.

The rally comes in support of President Michel Sleiman’s recent stance on Syrian border violations and in protest of the statements made by Foreign Minister Adnan Mansour and Syrian Ambassador to Lebanon Ali Abdul Karim Ali.

Assir began his protest against Hezbollah’s “extra-state" arms on June 28 and has repeatedly stressed that he won’t end the sit-in until his demands are met.

Assir has defied repeated calls to end his sit-in which has allegedly affected the merchants’ livelihoods and caused congested traffic in the town.
