Introduction to the evening news 02-08-2012

Kofi Annan resigned. Either he hit a dead-end, or witnessing massacres one after another made him finally declare his despair.              

As for Lebanon, divided by the Syrian crisis, it has not yet given up. Lebanon insists on turning its political division into a division based on basic issues. While the cabinet was to approve an advanced payment to meet the needs of the Syrian refugees, the Lebanese general security was deporting 14 Syrians. According to a statement issued by The General Security directorate the decision to deport the 14 Syrian nationals was based on criminal acts and violations they committed during their stay in Lebanon. This excuse may be legal; however it did not convince all ministers, or legal activists.                          

During days like these, only six years earlier, Israeli rockets were falling over Lebanese people, especially in the South and Beirut’s southern suburb. The Lebanese people back then used to displace to safer regions in Lebanon and also in Syria, where Syrians opened their houses and schools’ doors to receive them. Back then, the Syrian people did not need an order from anyone and did not face pressures; it just fulfilled its humanitarian and national obligation.       

Six years after and here is the Lebanese government looking, with suspicion, at the Syrian refugees fleeing death.          

Sheikh Assir returned home, teachers resumed corrections, EDL contract workers to remove their sit-in tomorrow, but 14 men were forced to leave our country without any clue as to where they will stay tonight.
