Rift among Christians deepens amid ongoing debate over electoral law

Debates among Christian leaders over the electoral law are ongoing as every party is seeking to serve its personal interest and that of its allies, with one main goal: ensuring a fair Christian representation.           

In this regard, Change and Reform bloc MP Ibrahim Kanaan told LBCI that debates are a proof of democracy and lead to "the most appropriate law". Kanaan considered that Christians have different points of view "and their allies must not turn these differences to disputes".        

As for Lebanese Forces member Joseph Maalouf, he told LBCI that the best representation of Christians and the Lebanese would be through small districts.         

In turn, Kataeb MP Samer Saade called for an electoral law that would protect Christians without being unjust to Muslims, according to the agreement reached in Bkerke. Saade pointed out that one party took a unilateral decision that undermined the Christians' interest.        

Saade told LBCI that the electoral law was criticized following the objection of main Sunni and Druze leaders.
