Maronite Bishops reject 60s law, call for the elections to be held in constitutional due time

The Maronite Bishops thanked President Michel Sleiman for his reception of Pope Benedict XVI when Lebanon was portrayed in a high manner, hoping that the Apostolic Exhortation will be applied thoroughly in Lebanon, especially among Christian parties.                               

“Our statement last month regarding the declining economic status in Lebanon is being well received”, the statement noted, adding that they will remain adamant on voicing the economic needs of the people in hopes of putting an end to immigration.                             

Commenting on Electoral Law, Maronite bishops refused the 60's law and any pertaining amendments, pointing that it does not assure fair representation. They added that a new electoral law should be drawn to ensure the rights of all Lebanese including Lebanese expatriates, stressing the need to hold the elections in due time according to the constitution.                
On the other hand, Maronite bishops said that the school fees must remain within the capacity of the parents in order to ensure fair education.                                         

The council of Maronite Bishops held on Friday a meeting at Bkerke, chaired by Patriarch Beshara Rai, in presence of Cardinal Nasrallah Sfeir and bishops to discuss national and church issues.
