Subsidies on poultry sector lifted
Secretary of the Lebanese Poultry Syndicate William Boutros expressed on Thursday his deep regret at the decision to lift subsidies on the poultry sector, citing its negative repercussions on the sector and the citizens alike.
In a statement, Boutros noted that some major poultry producers in Lebanon have been notified about the lift of subsidies by the Central Bank, asserting that such a decision will lead to the raise of the production costs, the increase of prices, and damage to the production cycle of the basic and only food sector that fully meets the needs of the local market for protein in spite of all the obstacles it faces.
Boutros voiced his surprise by this uncoordinated behavior with producers, adding that based on the state’s strategy and in light of the economic, financial and living crises that Lebanon is going through, support should be focused on all productive sectors, especially the poultry one, which is the pillar of the food security for the Lebanese people.

Boutros stressed that if it is impossible to continue with the subsidies in its current form "we demand urgently that the state take a series of measures to preserve and protect the sector, especially by raising the customs tariffs equivalent to their actual value that were in place before the collapse of the national currency."
