Mikati sources: Cabinet ponders over an exit to STL funding

Kuwaiti newspaper Al-Siyasa quoted sources close to PM Najib Mikati on Monday as saying that the issue of the STL funding is now simmering until a decision serving the interest of all the Lebanese is taken in this regard, especially that the cabinet is requested to deal with the matter with full responsibility and to take a decision that will not put Lebanon on collision course with the international community.

The sources stressed that Mikati is committed to pay Lebanon’s share of STL funding for he is aware of the threats and repercussions should the cabinet fail to provide the funding.

The sources highlighted behind-the-scenes calls within the majority party to reach, in consultation with Mikati, a unified position on the STL funding when the time is due.

According to information made available to the sources, Mikati will explain to all concerned parties the repercussions that any evasion of international obligation would entail, such as political and economic sanctions, especially that the international community will base its decisions on the Lebanese cabinet’s position in this regard.
