Nahas tells it like it is: blame economic policy not strikes

Labor Minister Charbel Nahas told Nharkom Said TV show that more than half a million Lebanese citizens left the country to find work abroad, adding that youth unemployment rates are reaching 20%.

“Portraying the problem as if it were confined to the workers who are demanding a raise, to their employees who are refusing these demands or to the cabinet, that is a mere mediator between both parties, is a mistake”, Nahas said.

Nahas stressed that the strike is not the main problem, rather the economic policy adopted, adding that the government, the General Workers’ Union (GWU) and the employers should gear up to face the important challenge of changing the economic pattern prevailing in the country.

“We have not received the cabinet’s budget yet”, Nahas said, adding, “We are against any rise in the Value Added Tax (VAT) and we will make sure that the Lebanese who decided to live and work in their country will have the opportunity to enjoy a strong purchasing power.”
