“It is rather an act of an unwavering faith in Lebanon and a tireless work to achieve the aspirations and hopes of the Lebanese.”

He concluded by voicing hopes that the days ahead “carry what the Lebanese people aspire to, with real cooperation amongst all interested parties, so that independence would have a broad meaning.”

For his part, MP Fouad Makhzoumi took also to Twitter to mark the occasion.

"What independence are you talking about when there is a group that imposes its authority on everyone by force of arms and threats, and a corrupt class that ruined the country and eliminated any hope for reform?," he said.

"It is true that the battle is difficult, but it is not impossible,” Makhzoumi added.

“Especially since we have an opportunity for change in the upcoming elections, we will liberate our country and restore it as a beacon to the Middle East with our strength and resolve," he concluded.

This as the Ministry of Culture announced in a statement that "on the orders of Minister of Culture Judge Muhammad Al-Mortada, the façade of the National Museum will be lit up in the colors of the Lebanese flag yesterday and today, on the occasion of the78th anniversary of Lebanon's independence."
