Sleiman, other Lebanese officials laud Palestine’s status upgrade

President Michel Sleiman commented on the upgrade of Palestine from “entity” to a “non-member state” at the U.N. describing it as a "victory for democracy."

Sleiman added that Israel should now reconsider its positions, and admit that democracy and peace are the only solutions.

For his part, Speaker Nabih Berri congratulated Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. "I congratulate you for the political and diplomatic victory that was accomplished due to your efforts to acquire the recognition of the Palestinian state," Berri wrote to Abbas in his letter.

Former PM Fouad Siniora also praised the decision and said that the UN General Assembly's session was "historical". "Israel's loss of this battle at the General Assembly means a lot," he stated.
