Cautious calm hovering over Arsal

A cloud of cautious calm is hovering over the city of Arsal where the residents are living on edge following the death of a Syrian citizen named Ali al-Khatib on Thursday.

The residents called on the Lebanese Armed forces (LAF) and the concerned authorities to urge the Syrian leadership to prevent the Syrian army from crossing the border.

The residents of Arsal said that Syrian army tanks raid their homes every once in a while, ruling out the notion that weapons smuggling operations are occurring from their town into Syria.

According to residents, Syrians regularly cross three to five kilometers into Lebanon. The municipal council urged the state to shield this town from any future security incidents.

Ali al-Khatib is just one of five Syrians who tried to cross the border into Lebanon in recent weeks.
