Postponing issues in a bid to stall the inevitable crises cannot drag on forever, and Lebanon’s duties are already knocking at the door: The U.N. letter addressed to the Lebanese government as a reminder of its commitment to settle its portion of the 2011 STL costs has pushed the debate around STL funding to center stage amid behind-the-scenes attempts to find a way out; because holding the cabinet together is a higher priority than solving the STL issue.       

PM Najib Mikati, who publicly voiced his commitment to funding the Tribunal, has now shared his concerns with Speaker Nabih Berri. But he did not emerge from Ain al-Tineh with a decisive solution on either the STL or wage increase issue. The employers with whom the PM met prior to his meeting with Berri outright refused the wage hike proposed by the General Federation of Labor Unions (GFLU or CGTL).        

Moreover, the state, as the largest employer, cannot afford a wage increase for the public sector or any modifications to the pay scales unless it endorses the tax increase included in the newly proposed state budget.        

This period will be characterized by turning around in circles on the same issues: Would the political constituents of the government including Amal, Hezbollah, the Free Patriotic Movement and the SSNP lend an ear to the GFLU who promise to begin their strike action on Wednesday? Or would the contacts between politicians succeed in shelving the problem so that cabinet members do not seem as if they are staging attacks against themselves?        

Meanwhile, Patriarch Rai is pressing on with his U.S. tour, which, since last night, has seen wider public participation. The reports of Rai’s criticism of the U.S. administration were neither confirmed nor denied by his camp.        

Back in Lebanon, March 14 forces used a book-launch in Dbayeh to honor Patriarch Sfeir.
