European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs Josep Borrell stressed on Tuesday that “after four inconclusive parliament sessions, President Michel Aoun’s term has ended on October 31, and no candidate has been elected and the Presidency of the Lebanese Republic is now vacant.”

“Since the last general elections last May, no government has been formed, and this political vacuum is occurring at a time when Lebanon is facing a deteriorating social and economic situation, institutional volatility combined with economic instability, which would pose grave risks to Lebanon and its people,” he noted.

“The European Union once again calls on the Lebanese leaders to hold presidential elections and form a government as quickly as possible,” Borrel stated.

He went on to explain that “last July, the EU renewed a sanctions framework that allows the imposition of restrictive measures on individuals or entities that prevent an exit from the Lebanese crisis.”

In order to facilitate the disbursement of additional international financing and to curb the deteriorating trend of the Lebanese economy, a financing agreement must be reached with the International Monetary Fund, and the long overdue major reforms must be undertaken without any further delay,” he underlined.

“The EU remains committed to continuing to assist Lebanon and its people to move forward towards the recovery and stability they deserve,” he mentioned, indicating that “at the same time, the EU urges the Lebanese leaders to assume their responsibilities and take the necessary measures.”
