Introduction to the evening news 04-01-2013

The issue of the refugees coming from Syria is longer just a humanitarian issue, it does no longer concern only the Syrians and Palestinians flocking into Lebanon, escaping "hell", it became a Lebanese cause which concerns the Lebanese community.     

In this context, ministers and deputies called for closing the borders or deporting the refugees, in statements they launched with the parliamentary elections drawing near thinking that such racism finds favor among the voters. However, the following questions arise: In which society do we live? How do we sharpen all this energy to hate?            

Are these the residues of the civil war, when we turned the page without engaging in real reconciliation and openness while blaming the foreigners for everything?            

Is it the cold civil peace controlled by the Syrian military, allowing us to control the Syrian workers?                        

Is it the political sectarianism which is no longer considered as a system by which the positions in the State are divided; however, turned into a system to hate the other, whether he was from another confession or another nationality or race?                 

Is it the sharp division which marked us with hatred?                

Is it the economic policy which made the immigration our only choice?                  

There is no accurate answer for these questions, but what is certain is that ensuring a decent life for the displaced from Syria became a condition for a viable Lebanese society.
