MP Gemayel calls for adopting the Orthodox gathering law based on the majoritarian system

MP Robert Ghanem delivered on Tuesday to Speaker Nabih Berri a report on previous sessions held by the sub-parliamentary committee tasked with discussing the electoral law.        

After the Sub-Committee's meeting, MP Ghanem said that various issues such as the constitution in light of the Taif Agreement were discussed and mentioned that another meeting for the sub-committee will be held at 5 PM.                                       

“The report on previous committee’s sessions was agreed on and it will be delivered to Speaker Berri,” he added.                                 

For his part, National Struggle Front MP MP Akram Chehayeb mentioned that deputies agreed on holding the elections on due time and settled on moving from the Taif Agreement toward "real equality".                                           

As for the Change and reform Bloc MP Alain Aoun, he said that it is important to proceed in discussions in order to hold the elections on due time.                                               

Among the stances was that of the Kataeb Deputy Sami Gemayel whereby he called for adopting the Orthodox Gathering electoral draft on a majoritarian basis instead of that of a proportional.                                  

For his part, Future Bloc MP Ahmad Fatfat said that any draft on the basis of proportionality is rejected and mentioned that they are ready to discuss any draft law related to the elections.                                      

“The Orthodox gathering electoral law should be more detailed because we believe in national unity,” Fatfat added.                                    

Meanwhile, LF MP Georges Adwan said that they insist on referring to the General Authority a new electoral law should an agreement be reached in this regard.                         

Separately, MP Marwan Hamadeh met with Speaker Berri at his residence in Ain el-Tineh. Hamadeh said that the stances of the Lebanese President Michel Sleiman and Speaker Berri will lead to overcoming the divisions pertaining to the electoral law.
