Aoun: I would like officials to fulfill their duties for once

Following the Change and Reform bloc's weekly meeting on Tuesday, MP Michel Aoun held a televised press conference in which he tackled the security situation in Tripoli and various social issues facing the country.

On Tripoli, Aoun described the attack on Minister Faisal Karami’s convoy last week as "one of grave importance" since he is a government official, stressing that "this incident is an attack against authority."

"We have growing concerns regarding the situation in Tripoli," Aoun added.

On social issues, Aoun stated that his bloc warned of all the dangers that could harm the nation, emphasizing that FPM officials assume full responsibility and are mobilizing the people for their own sake.

On the prison crisis, Aoun affirmed that the prisoners are Lebanese citizens who must be entitled to their rights, revealing that he has previously submitted a proposal to construct two new prisons in order to manage overcrowded jails.

Aoun then addressed Interior Minister Marwan Charbel and questioned him about the delay in the development projects at the Roumieh prison.

"I would like officials to fulfill their duties for once," Aoun stated.

Aoun also commented on the controversial issue of the electoral law directing a question at MP Boutros Harb: "Has the Taif Agreement sacrificed the third of Christian seats in the parliament in favor of the Muslim community?"

Aoun also addressed those who are criticizing the Orthodox Gathering electoral proposal and deeming it as "unconstitutional" and said that "the Lebanese Constitution has granted 64 parliamentary seats equally for both Christians and Muslims, and therefore a law that does not ensure adequate representation shall not pass."

"There are no legal obstacles that can hinder the ratification of the Orthodox Gathering draft law", he concluded.
