Lebanese University students demonstrate in solidarity with George Ibrahim

Students and teachers at the Lebanese University’s Faculty of Social Sciences in Beirut staged a demonstration on Wednesday in solidarity with the Lebanese detainee in France George Ibrahim Abdallah.

In this context, students and teachers gathered in the presence of George’s brother Joseph Ibrahim who is an instructor at the Northern Lebanese Branch.

Demonstrator chanted slogans in support of Ibrahim’s release and said that he is “a fighter for Lebanon and a supporter of the Palestinian cause”.

As for Joseph Ibrahim, he criticized those saying that his brother is a terrorist and added that “since the French Judiciary has decided to release him, it is pointless to keep him imprisoned”.

A similar demonstration was also staged at the Lebanese University's Nabatieh branch yesterday which come in line with several movements being held for the release of the political detainee.

Abdallah was jailed 28 years ago for attacks on U.S. and Israeli diplomats in France.

The General prosecution has previously appealed the decision of his release. Abdallah had been in prison for over 28 years, even though French law limits the maximum sentence of any prisoner to 18.

He was accused of engaging in commando operations carried out by the Lebanese Armed Revolutionary Factions; the court was not able to present concrete evidence against him in this regard so far.

He was arrested in 1984 and sentenced to life in prison three years later for his alleged involvement in the 1982 murders of U.S. military attache Charles Robert Ray and Israeli diplomat Yacov Barsimantov.
