European Observatory calls for swift solutions to Syrian refugee crisis in Lebanon

The European Observatory for Integrity in Lebanon issued a statement welcoming the decision voted on by the European Parliament on July 12, 2023, while expressing regret that some of the critical contents related to anti-corruption efforts have been overshadowed due to the "politicization" of the Syrian refugee file.

The Observatory emphasized that politicizing the discussion on Syrian refugees is unnecessary and leads to counterproductive results, especially since the refugee crisis has had a disastrous impact on Lebanon, threatening its sovereignty and stability.

Therefore, finding a solution that encourages the swift return of refugees is essential to enhance the situation in Lebanon.

The Observatory believes it is up to the Lebanese government to handle this issue, and it would be beneficial for parties in the future to support the state and its efforts regarding this matter.

However, it cannot be denied that the government, whose Prime Minister was appointed based on the decision of the European Parliament, no longer holds legitimacy with European authorities.

As long as the current government and some members of the European Parliament continue to protect corrupt individuals and obstruct investigations, they will lack credibility in addressing the issue of Syrian refugees in Lebanon.

The Observatory stressed the importance of welcoming some provisions of the decision, as it calls for imposing targeted sanctions on those involved in corruption or obstructing investigations, including the inquiry into the Beirut port explosion.
