LAF enhance security measures in Arsal, set checkpoints

The Lebanese Army set several checkpoints on Sunday at all the entrances of the border town of Arsal where army members are conducting raids to arrest several suspects. The army also cut off many of the town's main and internal roads.

In this context, military sources told LBCI that the Lebanese Army will continue to exert efforts until all the suspects in Arsal are arrested, stressing that two persons are suspected to be involved in Friday’s crime that caused the death of two army members.

Meanwhile, Ksarnaba residents held a peaceful protest to express their solidarity with the Lebanese Army and condemned the Arsal incident, demanding the prosecution of the criminals.

On Friday, a Lebanese army patrol was attacked by unidentified gunmen in Arsal. Major Pierre Bachaalany and First Seargent Ibrahim Zahraman were killed during the attack, while several other soldiers were wounded.

Positions:

Arsal Mayor Al-Hujayri denied his son's involvement in the attack against the LAF patrol, emphasizing that “Arsal residents were not aware that the persons who entered the town were LAF members.”

Al-Hujayri reportedly told PM Najib Mikati that Arsal stands by the Lebanese Army, adding that the incident was a mistake.

This as, PM Najib Mikati visited the Defense Ministry where he held a meeting with Army Commander Jean Kahwaji and Defense Minister Fayez Ghosn.

Following the meeting, Mikati told reporters that the Lebanese Army has his utmost support and full political cover to fulfill its duties, stressing that Arsal’s incident should be solved as quickly as possible.

Mikati urged Arsal residents to practice self-restraint and cooperate with the Lebanese Army.
