MP Robert Ghanem calls on the media to practice utmost objectivity

The parliamentary subcommittee tasked with discussing the electoral law resumed its meetings on Tuesday at parliament under the Chairmanship of MP Robert Ghanem.    

The subcommittee discussed the hybrid electoral law i.e. the law of proportionality and the majoritarian system mixed into one.                          

Following the Meeting, MP Robert Ghanem said that a positive atmosphere prevailed over the discussions of the subcommittee and called on the media to practice utmost objectivity and professionalism.                 

"The role of the media is that of partnership in serving the best interest of the country alongside the lawmakers," Ghanem said.                     

He said that tomorrows session will be dedicated to taking on the suggestions made by MP Akram Chehayeb and MP Ali Bazzi.                     

For his part, MP Serge Torsarkissian insisted on taking to the podium among objections of fellow lawmakers following the subcommittee meeting and responded to comments made by MP Alain Aoun regarding the Future bloc's electoral initiative saying that Armenians are well represented.                  

"Changing the equation in the country cannot be achieved without taking into account the given demographic balance," MP Torsarkissian said.                                                      

Prior to the meeting, the representative of the Change and Reform Bloc MP Alain Aoun said that the electoral initiative presented by the Future Bloc came at a late stage and "unfortunately was disappointing".                                   

MP Aoun said that the electoral suggestion is not balanced and does not ensure adequate representation and added that it creates inadequacy at the level of the Christian representation.                         

During a press conference held at the parliament, MP Aoun said that the Future's draft aims at luring the head of the National Struggle Front MP Walid Jumblaat towards supporting it and pointed out that the electoral law is only made for this alliance.                                      

Aoun pointed out that the aforementioned electoral draft seeks the creation of disputes among Christians since there is consensus on the Orthodox Gathering electoral draft.                                   

"The only positive point in this draft is that it divides Zahle into 2 electoral districts," Aoun said.                              

Aoun considered that this draft targets the Armenian Sect from the policy pursued by the movement since the year 2000.                              

For his part, Future Bloc MP Ahmad Fatfat said that the Future Movement is aware of the Christian representation and considered that MP Alain Aoun's speech is "provocative and theatrical".                       

Fatfat stressed that the Future electoral draft gives Christians the chance to elect 48 deputies.
