MP Ghanem: We hope to reach consensus over hybrid draft law

The Subcommittee tasked with discussing the electoral law convened on Tuesday at the Parliament under the chairmanship of MP Robert Ghanem and in the presence of various MPs.           

Following the meeting, MP Robert Ghanem said that deputies agreed on several points of view and mentioned that they discussed during the session the hybrid law.            

MP Ghanem added that discussions were positive and added that they could reach a consensus if all parties don't have any preconceived notions.                 

"We are hoping to reach a consensus over a hybrid draft law that combines both majoritartian and proportional representation," MP Ghanem said.            

For his part, MP Ahmad Fatfat said that the Future Bloc is committed to Former PM Saad hariri's draft law, but they suggested a hybrid proposal to conduct the elections on due time.        

"We suggested holding the elections based 70% on the majoritarian system, and 30% according to the law of proportionality," MP Fatfat added.        

As for the LF MP Georges Adwan, he said that all parties agreed that the new law will be "mixed" and mentioned that there is no stability without the elections, but they cannot be held without the ratification of a new electoral law.         

"The Orthodox Gathering electoral draft will only be voted upon if the subcommittee does not reach a consensus," Adwan said.
