Mikati: Cabinet is bound to conduct elections on June 9th

PM Najib Mikati said on Tuesday that the Lebanese government is bound to conduct the parliamentary elections on their due time (June 9th 2013) according to the current law (60’s law) if the parliament does not ratify a new one.

Mikati added that the cabinet will most probably discuss the formation of a supervisory commission for elections during Wednesday’s session, stressing that the postponement of the elections is only decided by the parliament and that the government will not be sending any draft law to amend the elections date.

Mikati also met with Belgian Speaker Andre Flahaut, whereby the two discussed bilateral relations.

On the other hand, the Belgian Speaker Andre Flahaut, heading a delegation, visited the Lebanese President Michel Sleiman where they discussed the bilateral relations and cooperation between both parliaments. Sleiman thanked the Belgian delegation for the country's participation in the international forces working in the South of Lebanon.

Separately, Lebanese Speaker Nabih Berri and his Belgian counterpart signed a partnership protocol between the two countries and discussed the current situation in the region. Berri also thanked the Belgian delegation for preserving the interests of the Lebanese community in Belgium which exceeds seven thousand people. For his part, Flahaut stressed the importance of Lebanon's stability and unity.

Flahaut who arrived in Lebanon on Monday on an official visit expected to last several days.
