Teachers commit to Wednesday’s strike while Catholic schools open their doors

The General Assemblies in Beirut, the North, the South, Nabatieh, Bekaa and Mount Lebanon approved the recommendation of Lebanon’s Teachers Syndicate executive council to hold a general strike and a sit-in next Wednesday.      

Head of the Teachers Union in Lebanon, Nehme Mahfoud, called on everyone to head to the Union’s centers on Wednesday morning to participate in the sit-in outside the Grand Serail to express their refusal of the “humiliating and degrading” wage increase approved by the cabinet, and the new fiscal policy, mainly the tax on the VAT and gasoline.  

Meanwhile, the General Secretariat of Catholic Schools in Lebanon announced that Wednesday, October 19th will be a normal school day.     

The General Secretariat called on all schools administrations to assess the situation on the ground in their schools and take the necessary measures and positions in line with the higher institutions’ interests.
