Education sector on strike, tense atmosphere in cabinet session

Several groups, ranging from primary, middle, and high schools- both public and private- to professional schools, and Lebanese university professors joined Wednesday’s strike.

Around 50,000 teachers in the private sector and 35,000 teachers in the public sector abstained from teaching. Unlike the Association of State employees, the General Secretariat of Public Schools, some private educational institutions and the Association of Private Schools Owners did not adhere to the strike.

Teachers staged a sit-in before the Grand Serail, at the request of the Coordinating Body of Trade Unions, in protest at the cabinet decision on wage adjustment.

Al-Akhbar daily said that Wednesday’s cabinet session will be held amid a tense atmosphere.
