Gunmen storm into hospital, release Islamist detained for opening fire on Karami’s convoy

Masked gunmen stormed into Tripoli’s Islamic Hospital on Saturday afternoon, releasing Islamist detainee Mohammad Youssef at gunpoint. Youssef was being treated in room number 2306 which was guarded by two ISF members; the gunmen stripped them of their weapons and took the detainee out of the hospital.

Security forces are currently investigating with the two security guards to be briefed on the incident’s circumstances and prosecute the perpetrators.

It is noteworthy that Youssef was severely injured while opening fire on the convoy of Youth and Sports Minister Faisal Karami. He was detained and being treated at the Islamic Hospital in Tripoli.

In this regard, exclusive sources told LBCI that detainee Mohammad Youssef is not accused of opening fire on Minister Karami’s convoy, stressing that there are no arrest warrants against him.

Sources pointed out that negotiations are ongoing with the ISF to make sure Mohammad Youssef is brought back to the hospital.

Gunmen stormed into Tripoli’s Islamic Hospital on Saturday, releasing Islamist detainee Mohammad Youssef who was arrested for opening fire on the convoy of Lebanese Minister of Youth and Sports Faisal Karami.

At least four people were injured after gunmen ambushed the convoy of Minister Karami in the northern city of Tripoli on Friday January 18.

The incident reportedly took place after Karami's bodyguards exchanged fire with protesters who were participating in a sit-in to demand the release of Islamist detainees held at Roumieh prison.

While Karami said he doesn’t think he was personally targeted, his father, former Premier Omar Karami said the incident was a “mistake,” adding that no lawsuit would be filed in the case.

A few days later, Interior Minister Marwan Charbel announced that one of the wounded who is suspected to be involved in the attack is in prison “but the main perpetrators remain at large.”
