Valero: France’s stance on STL is clear

The French Foreign Ministry spokesman Bernard Valero told An-Nahar newspaper that France’s stance on the funding of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL) was clear from the beginning, adding “the tribunal is independent; it was established by the U.N. Security Council resolution 1757 approved under chapter 7”.

“In virtue of this resolution, Lebanon must pay its share of the STL funding, that is 65 million dollars per year, which constitute 49% of the court’s annual budget”, he said.

Valero added that PM Najib Mikati pledged to fund the STL at the U.N. General Assembly, adding that France is making sure Lebanon respects all of its international commitments.

On the sanctions that may be imposed on Lebanon if it refrained from funding the tribunal, Valero hoped that Lebanon will avoid them by fulfilling its promise.

Valero stressed that the aids that may be provided to Lebanon in the framework of the European partnership are still under discussion and have not been approved yet.
