MPs trade insults in chaotic session as Lebanon’s Speaker Berri steps in (Videos)

A series of heated altercations broke out in Lebanon’s parliament Wednesday, disrupting proceedings and underscoring deepening political divisions.

The tension began when MP Salim Aoun interrupted MP Ahmad Kheir mid-speech, prompting Kheir to snap back: “Silence!”

The atmosphere escalated further when MP Firas Hamdan remarked, “All this is for the sake of the son-in-law”—a pointed jab widely interpreted as a reference to Free Patriotic Movement (FPM) leader Gebran Bassil. FPM MPs objected strongly, leading Speaker Nabih Berri to instruct that the phrase “son-in-law” be stricken from the record.

When Aoun later interrupted Hamdan again, Berri issued a sharp rebuke: “Salim, don’t test me!”
