Lebanon thanks Kuwait as first oil shipment arrives for power plants

Lebanon received its first oil tanker from Kuwait on Saturday, part of the country’s pledge to supply 132,000 metric tons of gas oil to support electricity production at Électricité du Liban’s power plants.

According to a statement from the office of Energy Minister Joe Saddi, 66,000 tons of the shipment are a grant, effectively providing the fuel at half price, well below any other available market rate.

The statement emphasized that, under Minister Saddi’s decision not to burden Lebanon with additional debt, the cost of the Kuwaiti oil will be paid through Électricité du Liban’s collections, avoiding extra financial pressure on citizens.

“We extend our sincere thanks to the State of Kuwait for its contribution to facilitating electricity production,” the statement said. “This support is not surprising, as Kuwait has long stood by Lebanon and its people in their most difficult times.”
