Israeli military announces killing of top Hezbollah military figure

The Israeli military announced Sunday that it had killed Haytham Ali Tabtabai, identified by Israel as Hezbollah’s chief of staff, in an airstrike on Beirut’s southern suburbs.

In a statement, Israeli army spokesperson Avichay Adraee claimed that Tabtabai joined Hezbollah in the 1980s and rose through the ranks to command several key units, including the elite Radwan Force, and later oversaw the group’s operations in Syria.

Israel claims he played a major role in strengthening Hezbollah’s military infrastructure there.

The spokesperson said Tabtabai also headed Hezbollah’s operations system during the war and later assumed responsibility for managing the conflict with Israel. Following what Israel calls Operation Northern Arrows, he was appointed chief of staff and allegedly led Hezbollah’s reconstruction and rearmament efforts.
