Tehran responds to FM Rajji: No need for a neutral venue between ‘brotherly’ states

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi responded on Thursday to comments by his Lebanese counterpart, Youssef Rajji, expressing surprise at his decision not to accept Iran’s offer of reciprocal hospitality during their recent diplomatic exchange.

In a statement on X, the Iranian minister thanked Rajji for his invitation but said it was “bemusing” that Lebanon would decline Iran’s gesture. He added that foreign ministers of countries with “brotherly and full diplomatic relations” do not require a neutral venue to meet.

He acknowledged Lebanon’s domestic pressures, saying he understands why Rajji “is not prepared to visit Tehran,” given the "Israeli occupation" and ongoing ceasefire violations.

He added, “I will gladly accept his invitation to come to Beirut. We, too, seek ‘a new chapter’ in bilateral relations based on the precise principles FM Rajji outlines.”
