Parliamentary Communications Committee session adjourned until Monday

Speaker Nabih Berri adjourned on Saturday the session of the parliamentary communications committee until Monday.                

Following the session, member of the Future bloc, MP Ahmad Fatfat said that the hybrid electoral draft law is a "law which does not cause any troubles," noting that Hezbollah deputies will boycott the General Authority session in case the hybrid law were presented for vote.                    

"We have reached a stage where the 1960 electoral law will be our only choice," he added.                            

For his part, member of the Change and Reform bloc MP Alain Aoun said that they have reached a deadlock where every party started discussing two options: elections according to the 1960 law or the extension of the parliament's mandate.                  

On the other hand, member of the Loyalty to the Resistance bloc MP Ali Fayyad said that he was hoping that the Lebanese people will celebrate the passing of a new electoral law, "but unfortunately it did not happen."                

He noted that setting a new date for the parliamentary communications committee proves that everyone feels guilty of the situation and acknowledges the need to reach an agreement.                    

In turn, member of the Lebanese Forces bloc MP George Adwan said that "the fair representation tuned into a weapon used in the ongoing battle," stressing that they can still reach consensus over a balanced electoral law.                        

However, member of the Kataeb bloc MP Sami Gemayel said that the electoral laws which have been presented do not ensure the victory for any party, pointing out that "the parties are not willing to place their destiny through elections, the results of which are not previously known."                      

Gemayel added that they have been positively dealing with the matter and refusing to hinder any attempt for agreement, "but the pressure and the tension prevailing are beating them", calling on all the parties to act wisely.                      

Earlier in the day, sources told LBCI that Speaker Berri called for holding another session on Monday, to be followed by a meeting of the Parliament’s Bureau in order to discuss the agenda of the upcoming General Authority session.                               

For his part, Future Bloc MP Serge Torsarkissian told LBCI that the Parliamentary Communications Committee will proceed in its meeting until reaching common grounds and consensus.
