Najjar: Constitutional Council does not work under political pressure

Former Justice Minister Ibrahim Najjar said on Monday that the Constitutional Council does not work under political pressure, adding that the Council received the appeal of President Michel Sleiman on Friday and will start studying it today.      

Najjar told LBCI during Nharkom Said that the Free Patriotic Movement deputies will also be presenting their appeal today, stressing that the Constitutional Council will hold a meeting on Tuesday to discuss it.                          

Najjar added that the mandate of the parliament ends on the 20th of June and mentioned that the Constitutional Council should take a decision regarding the appeals before the end of this mandate.         

“The Constitutional Council has the right to join the appeal presented by President Sleiman with that presented by the FPM since they both address the same law,” Najjar concluded.

On Friday the 31st of May, 97 parliamentarians ratified a law to extend the current parliament's mandate until the 20th of November 2014. The session was held amid the discontent of several civil society groups who gathered before Nejmeh Square pelting lawmakers with tomatoes in protest of the decision.            
The Free Patriotic Movement boycotted the session, announcing that they would file an appeal to the Constitutional Council. Similarly, President Michel Sleiman also vowed to fight the said law, citing its unconstitutionality as the main reason behind his move.
