Jellyfish boom expected across Med Sea this summer, may severely impact tourism

           
Swarms of jellyfish spotted in the Mediterranean Sea were enough to prompt early warnings of an explosion in the population of the venomous sea creatures across the shores of the coastline.       

Global warming and overfishing seem to be the main instigators of the population increase in the said sea; a predecessor to what may a global maritime catastrophe.              

A report issued by the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean and the United Nations, titled “Review of Jellyfish Blooms in the Mediterranean and Black Sea,” says scientists are catching up to what travelers in the Med have been experiencing for years.           

Tourism based on sea-life remains one of the main sources of income around the shores of the Mediterranean Sea.  Fears now rise as the bloom of the sea creatures appears to have encouraged the overpopulation of the most poisonous forms of jellyfish given the lack of their natural predator from the environment caused by overfishing.

If stinging jellyfish persist, stung tourists may have to cancel their reservations or reduce the length of their stay resulting in a severe decline of the industry, the study continuous.
