Mikati after Cameron meeting: cabinet will face STL funds decision

Lebanese PM Najib Mikati highlighted the importance of preserving stability in Lebanon and committing to international resolutions, notably UNSCR 1701.     

Following a meeting with his British counterpart David Cameron on Tuesday, Mikati voiced hope that the UK will extend support to the LAF, help Lebanon with the delineation of its maritime border and exert pressure on Israel to halt its violation of Lebanon’s sovereignty.    

The Lebanese prime minister stressed that the issue of funding the STL will be presented to the cabinet to take the appropriate decision in this regard.        


The British prime minister confirmed, in turn, that the UK supports Lebanon’s sovereignty and independence, underscoring the importance for Lebanon to fully implement resolution 1701 and pay its share of the STL costs.      

Cameron also stressed that Lebanon will play a key role in the Arab Spring in the upcoming phase, notably by spreading the Lebanese democratic experience throughout the Arab world.    

Speaking about the Palestinian issue, Cameron underlined the importance of reviving the peace process and resuming negotiations to reach a two-state solution.     

Mikati handed Cameron a “list of demands” that outlines the needs of the Lebanese government on the civil and military level.     

In concluding their meeting, Mikati invited Cameron to pay a visit to Lebanon; the latter promised to fulfill the invitation at the earliest opportunity.
