Arab foreign ministers convene to impose sanctions on Syria as death toll rises

Arab foreign ministers held a meeting at the Arab League on Saturday to discuss the possibility of imposing economic sanctions on Syria over its failure to let Arab League monitors oversee an initiative aimed at ending a violent crackdown on protests against President Bashar Assad.

On the ground, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said that dozens of soldiers were killed and tens were wounded in clashes between the Syrian Army and defected soldiers east of the country Friday evening. One civilian was also killed by security forces gunfire.

On the other hand, the Local Coordination Committees of Syria charged with overseeing the protest movements confirmed in a statement that the army is surrounding the Ghassan Abboud area and deploying snipers on rooftops. Security and army operatives are conducting house-to-house searches for defected soldiers.
