Assad: Foreign interference threatens to divide the region

Syrian President Bashar Assad warned Sunday that foreign interference threatens to divide the region and increase extremism.

During his meeting with a Russian Federation Council delegation, Assad praised the balanced and constructive position of Russia.

On the other hand, the Russian delegation reiterated its support of reform in Syria, stressing objection to foreign interference in Syria’s internal affairs.

As the uprising in Syria entered its seventh month, clashes between security forces and protesters erupted mainly in the Idlib province, the outskirts of Homs, and in the Damascus suburb of Doumma, pro-democracy activists said.

Activists also reported that dozens of students have demonstrated near the capital Damascus calling for the downfall of President Bashar Assad's regime on the first day of school in Syria.

The Syrian uprising began in mid-March, amid a wave of protests in the Arab world that toppled autocrats in Tunisia, Egypt and Libya.
