Syrian refugees board trains in Budapest

Dozens of migrants crowded platforms at Budapest main train station before boarding morning trains travelling west to Austria and Germany on Tuesday morning (September 1).

The migrants, most of them fleeing Syria's civil war, hope they will be allowed entry into Austria so they can reach Germany, their most popular destination preferred.

Austrian authorities let through at least four trains carrying large numbers of migrants from Hungary on Monday (August 31), effectively giving up attempts to apply EU rules which bar entrance to refugees who had already claimed asylum in Hungary.

Others, mostly those without money for tickets or necessary papers, could be seen sleeping in tents and in open air in the area around the station building.

The migrants' plight highlights the huge challenge facing the European Union, which has eliminated border controls between 26 states of the "Schengen area" but requires new asylum seekers to apply in the first country they enter - in this case Hungary.

Most of the migrants have no intention of staying in Hungary but aim to reach wealthy western European countries.
