REPORT: Arsal, target for Syrian shelling since the beginning of the Syrian crisis

The northeastern town of Arsal is the line of contact with the Syrian revolution due to geographical and religious factors. The town’s citizens support the revolution and help the rebels by allowing arms smuggling and by hosting the refugees.

Accordingly, Arsal’s situation made the town a part of the Syrian conflict which has been expanding toward Lebanon, leading caretaker Defense Minister Fayez Ghosn to declare on the 20th of December 2011 that Arsal has become a route for al-Qaeda toward Syria.

This alleged route soon turned into a target for the Syrian shelling, as dozens of attacks have occurred against the town leaving two killed and several injured, not to mention the damages caused to the properties.

This report will highlight the different attacks carried out from the Syrian side targeting the Lebanese border town of Arsal, and will expose the point of view of the village’s residents regarding the situation.
