REPORT: Will Sidi Bouzid be the cradle of a new revolution?

The revolution of freedom and dignity, also known as the Jasmine Revolution of 17th of December was triggered in the city of Sidi Bouzid when Tunisian citizen Mohammad Bouazizi set himself on fire after a policeman confiscated his vegetable cart, and died later after sustaining severe burns.

The incident caused public outrage, leading to mass protests across the Tunisian cities and then to the departure of President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali and cabinet reshuffle, making the city of Sidi Bouzid the cradle of the Tunisian revolution and the Arab Spring.

Two years have passed since the first revolution, and today’s scene in Sidi Bouzid did not change, since the city is the hometown of the slain opposition figure Mohammad al-Barahimi who was assassinated last Thursday and whose funeral turned into resentment against the Islamic Nahda.
