REPORT: LAF commander says army pursuing terrorist cell plotting attacks across the country

               
Lebanese Armed Forces Commander General Jean Kahwagi confirmed Wednesday the army forces have been tracking and pursuing a terrorist cell for months, adding that the said cell is responsible for the Roueis bomb attack.               

In a ceremony honoring retired officers, Kahwagi announced that the LAF is fighting one of the toughest wars against terrorism in its mission to track down the terrorist cell plotting further attacks across several Lebanese regions in a bid to incite sectarian strife in the country.              

“The terrorist cell does not aim to target a chosen area, or a chosen sect for that manner,” he said, adding that the cell instead aims at triggering sectarian hatred by targeting several areas of a different political affiliation.                 

“The fight against terrorism is not one of a political background or objective,” he concluded.           

A powerful car bomb tore through the Beirut Southern Suburbs' region of Roueis, a stronghold of Hezbollah on Thursday the 15th of August, claiming the lives of 27 civilians and leaving more than 289 wounded, some of whom are still receiving treatment.                                     

This is the second explosion to target the area in the span of less than a couple of months. A large explosion rocked a stronghold of the Hezbollah group south of the Lebanese capital Tuesday July 9th, setting several cars on fire and causing an estimated 53 injuries, security officials said.                                        

The violence raises the specter of Lebanon being pulled into the increasingly sectarian civil war raging next door in Syria.
