REPORT: Telecommunications Minister Sehnaoui says internet problem solved

Caretaker Telecommunications Minister Nicolas Sehnaoui stressed Saturday that the internet problem was solved, noting that IMEWE payment was sent today (Saturday) at 11 am, following efforts deployed in coordination with Finance Minister Mohammad Safadi.

"Lebanon was never under threat of loss of internet bandwidth as, since April 2013 the country had full redundancy through the Qadmos/Alexandros cables," Sehnaoui explained via Twitter.

Earlier in the day, al-Akhbar Daily reported that Lebanon may no longer be connected to the India-Middle East-Western Europe (IMEWE) international cable as of Sunday, due to the Telecommunications Ministry's failure to pay its dues to the Consortium Company, which owns the IMEWE cable.

In this context, sources told the Daily that the company's administration had warned Lebanon of the need to settle its dues reaching USD 1.6 million within a deadline ending on November 3; otherwise, the board of directors will vote on confiscating Lebanon’s share in the said cable, according to the contract.
