REPORT: Top al-Qaeda commander dies in Lebanon

A Lebanese army general says the leader of an al-Qaeda-linked group that has conducted attacks across the Middle East before shifting its focus to Syria's civil war has died in custody in Lebanon.

The general says the detainee, Majed al-Majed, died on Saturday after suffering kidney failure. The general spoke on condition of anonymity in line with regulations.

Accordingly, Judge Saqr tasked the forensic doctor with examining al-Majed’s body in order to determine the cause of death and prepare a report containing all medical documents to inform the Saudi embassy of the latest development.

This as sources told LBCI that Majed al-Majed was in a critical health condition the moment of his arrest, since he was suffering from kidney failure.

Other sources revealed to LBCI that the US had provided the Lebanese authorities with information on al-Majed’s movements leading to his arrest, noting that the Saudi authorities were keen following up on the situation of al-Majed in order to interrogate him.

Al-Majed, a Saudi citizen was detained in Lebanon late last month and had been held at a secret location.

He was the purported commander of the Abdullah Azzam Brigades and one of the 85 most-wanted individuals in his native Saudi Arabia.

The US State Department designated the group a foreign terrorist organization in 2012, freezing any assets it holds in the United States and banning Americans from doing business with the group.
