REPORT: President Seliman: We seek to protect our democracy

French President Francois Hollande stressed Wednesday the need to support Lebanon in dealing with the issue of the Syrian refugees, congratulating President Michel Sleiman on his stances launched over the past few months amid the critical security situation.

During the inauguration of the conference of the International Support Group for Lebanon in Paris, Hollande said that coordination is ongoing with Saudi Arabia in order to provide the Lebanese army with the necessary equipment, and to collect funds to help the Syrian refugees in Lebanon.

For his part, Lebanese President Michel Sleiman called on the countries concerned with the Lebanese affairs to contribute to the fund founded to assist Lebanon, hoping that a solution will be reached for the Syrian crisis and comprehensive plan will be placed to help the refugees.

“We seek to protect our democracy and institutions; this meeting aims at assisting Lebanon and protecting its people,” he said.

Sleiman expressed gratitude to Saudi Arabia for the grant offered, stressing that the Lebanese army receives internal support and seeks to deal with all the challenges that threat Lebanon’s security.

In turn, the United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs Jeffrey Feltman noted that the assistance will be offered, hoping that Lebanon will be able to deal with all kinds of challenges.
