REPORT: Clashes renew between gunmen and army forces in Tripoli’s Syria Street

Clashes renewed on Monday evening between gunmen and Lebanese Armed Forces in Tripoli’s Syria Street, while sniping operations continued in the regions of Mallouleh and Bab al-Tebbaneh.

LAF units intensified their deployment and conducted motorized patrols across the city's streets and squares, where checkpoints were set up in order to check the commuters' identities.

The Lebanese army blocked the international highway linking Tripoli to Akkar in Zahiriyah, preventing the citizens from taking the road due to the heavy sniping operations that reach the highway at Abou Ali roundabout and Al-Mallouleh Bridge.

A new round of clashes erupted in Tripoli on Thursday March 13th killing at least 12 and injuring 63 others.

The port city of Tripoli has long been a stronghold of Sunni Islamists in northern Lebanon.

But the city has become increasingly volatile in recent months due to the civil war in neighboring Syria, where the Sunni majority is leading a revolt against President Bashar al-Assad.

Disputes from neighboring Syria's civil war frequently inflame sectarian grievances in Tripoli.

These clashes pit gunmen from both the mostly Sunni Bab Tabbaneh district and the Jabal Mohsen district which mostly comprises residents of Syrian President Bashar Assad's Alawite sect, a Shiite Islam offshoot.
