REPORT: Syria says Turkey shot down plane pursuing rebels inside Syria
Syria said Turkish air defences shot down a Syrian jet on Sunday while it was attacking rebel forces inside Syrian territory, calling the move a "blatant aggression".

State television quoted a military source as saying the pilot managed to eject from the plane. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group said initial reports from the area said the plane came down on the Syrian side of the border.

Meanwhile, Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan said his country's armed forces had shot down a Syrian jet after it violated Turkish airspace, confirming media reports.

"A Syrian plane violated our airspace. Our F-16s took off and hit this plane. Why? because if you violate my airspace, our slap after this will be hard," he told a rally of his supporters in northwest Turkey ahead of March 30 local elections.

Turkey's armed forces shot down a Syrian plane on Sunday after it crossed into Turkish air space, Turkish broadcaster NTV reported, quoting officials.

Syrian activists said the incident occurred close to an area where Syrian rebels have been battling President Bashar al-Assad's forces for control of a border crossing between the two countries.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights quoted local residents as saying the plane was brought down by shooting from the Turkish side of the border. Al Manar, the television station of Lebanon's Hezbollah group, said two rockets were fired from Turkish territory.

This comes after fighting raged between rebels and Syrian regime troops in Syria's northern Latakia province seeking to seize Kasab border crossing into Turkey, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

Rami Abdel Rahman, director of the UK-based Observatory the fighters included the al-Qaeda affiliated al-Nusra Front and other fighters are active near the crossing border.

The Observatory for Human Rights said that the battles killed at least 50 people from both sides.

Syria's uprising, which began with largely peace protests in March 2011, has evolved into a civil war with sectarian overtones that has left more than 140,000 people dead.
