REPORT: UCC calls for holding a sit-in and strike

The Union Coordinating Committee announced on Saturday that it will stage a strike next Wednesday over the failure to refer the new pay scale to parliament.

The UCC added that it will hold a strike and stage a sit-in at Riyad al-Solh Square, in light of the joint parliamentary committees' failure on Friday to ratify the discussions over the new wage scale.

It accused Lebanese leaders of yielding to pressure from the Economic Committees when it failed to refer the wage scale to parliament.

The strike will include all public institutions and public and private schools.

The UCC warned that it may hold an open-ended strike starting April 7 in case the joint parliamentary committees fail to approve the wage scale.

Former Prime Minister Najib MiKati's cabinet endorsed in 2012 a new salary scale for public employees ending a long dispute that had led the UCC, a association of private and public school teachers and public sector employees, to hold several sit-ins and strikes.

President Michel Sleiman signed the decree in June 2013 and it was referred to the joint parliamentary committees for further scrutiny.

The state treasury will have more than $1.2 billion to cover as there are over 180,000 public sector employees.
