REPORT: EDL contract workers reopen Karantina highway
Electricite du Liban contract workers reopened both sides of the Karantina highway after having blocked it with burning tires in the region of Corniche el-Nahr Monday morning.

Labor Minister Sajaan Azzi arrived to the institution's headquarters and called on the cabinet to mull the case of the EDL workers.

Workers had also cut-off a road at the entrance of the Tyre branch and burned tires inside the Corniche el-Nahr's headquarters after having blocked its gates.

EDL contract workers have been protesting for months calling on the government to employ them as full-time staff and to pay their salaries.

Their protests have included shutting the gates of EDL headquarters in Beirut and disrupting normal work at the state-run company.

In this regard, the Head of EDL workers committee Lebnan Makhoul warned they will cut off power in Lebanon if the Parliament endorses the draft law as proposed by Change and Reform bloc MP Ibrahim Kanaan.

Makhoul said Kanaan's law is "a massacre" against EDL workers, deeming it as unfair.

For his part, MP Kanaan confirmed to LBCI that the law is fair, and said: "I signed it upon the request of the blocs' leaders as well as Speaker Nabih Berri".

"If they want to introduce any amendments to the law, they should submit them to Parliament," he added.
