REPORT: FBI seeks Lebanese public’s help in child molestation case
The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is seeking the public’s assistance to identify possible victims of a suspected child predator who taught in Lebanon in the 1970s.

Beginning in 1972, William James Vahey taught at schools in a variety of countries, including Lebanon.

Last month, his employer at a high school in Nicaragua found a thumb drive that contained sexually graphic images of at least 90 victims. When confronted with the thumb drive, Vahey allegedly admitted to molesting the children and giving them sleeping pills prior to committing the acts.

According to the FBI, Vahey, 64, committed suicide on March 21. Vahey taught at a number of international schools in the past four decades, including the American Community School in Beirut from 1973 – 1975.

The FBI has evidence of molestation of students dating to 2008, but believes there may be victims that span Vahey’s entire teaching career.

“He had access to children because of his position of trust,” said Special Agent Patrick Fransen.

“He created a system that gave him the opportunity and the means to molest children. The manner in which he committed these acts—while the boys were unconscious—may have inhibited them from knowing what happened, making it impossible for them to come forward at the time of the molestation.”

The FBI urges whoever has information about the ongoing investigation– or believe you or your child may have been a victim to complete the FBI’s confidential English-language questionnaire at http://www.fbi.gov/stats-services/victim_assistance/seeking-victim-information/seeking-victims-in-william-james-vahey-case.

You may also submit a confidential E-mail to Ovictimassistance@ic.fbi.gov

A list of Vahey’s professional history, which includes the schools where he worked and the dates of employment, is available at www.fbi.gov/williamjamesvahey.
