REPORT: FPM leader MP Aoun meets Kataeb leader Gemayel, discuss presidential elections
Free Patriotic Movement leader MP Michel Aoun met on Wednesday with the Kataeb party leader Amin Gemayel in Rabieh.

Following the meeting, Gemayel stressed the importance of preserving the state's institutions and the stability in the country, adding that a new president must be elected within the constitutional deadline.

Gemayel dubbed the meeting with Aoun "positive and helpful" where discussions featured high on the importance of deploying all possible efforts to completing the presidential race.

For his part, Aoun said that the meeting with Gemayel yielded positive results, stating a new phase of cooperation had started with Gemayel.

"We are both adamant on holding the presidential elections on their due time," he said.

Lebanese MPs failed in the first, second and third rounds of the vote to elect a new president due to disputes between the March 8 and 14 camps.

Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea, who is the March 14 alliance's only candidate, failed in the first round to obtain the needed two-thirds of votes of the 128-member parliament.

In the second round, March 8's MPs boycotted the session, resulting in a lack of quorum.

March 8 did not yet officially announce its candidate. But the camp’s figures have reiterated that Lebanon needs a consensual person in the country's top Christian post.

President Michel Sleiman's tenure ends in May 2014 but the constitutional period to elect a new head of state began on March 25.
