REPORT: Calm prevails over Tripoli after attack on army patrol
Calm prevailed on Monday over the northern city of Tripoli hours after eight Lebanese Armed Forces soldiers were wounded on Monday overnight as tension soared in the northern city between LAF soldiers and armed men from Bab el-Tebbaneh.

In the details, an army vehicle was targeted as soldiers were conducting raids to arrest wanted men identified as Khaled Rai, Talal Issa, Abou Omar Mansour, and Abou Khalil Hallak.

It was later on reported that LAF soldiers entered into Tripoli’s Bab el-Tebbaneh to remove the targeted vehicle, and citizens cooperated with them to contain the situation.

Army statement

The Army Command - Orientation Directorate issued a statement on Tuesday morning stating that around 1:30 am an army vehicle came under attack in Tripoli’s Bab el-Tebbaneh.

The Army Command added that 8 LAF soldiers were wounded during the attack, pointing out that they were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment. It also stated that soldiers responded to the sources of fire, stressing that army units are still conducting raids in the northern city of Tripoli to arrest a number of fugitives.

Security plan

Early last month, the Lebanese army started implementing, in cooperation with the security apparatuses, a security plan in Lebanon's northern city upon the directives of the cabinet.

This plan has so far succeeded in implementing peace in the area, and has led to the arrest of several axis leaders and fugitives.

Cabinet had tasked the army and security forces with controlling the security situation in Tripoli and the eastern Bekaa Valley in areas bordering Syria. Disputes from neighboring Syria's civil war frequently inflame sectarian grievances in Tripoli.

These clashes pit gunmen from both the mostly Sunni Bab Tabbaneh district that supports that uprising in Syria, and the Jabal Mohsen district which mostly comprises residents of Syrian President Bashar Assad's Alawite sect, a Shiite Islam offshoot.
